Faroese National Collection / Feroica

 The role of the National Collection

To collect everything that has been printed in the Faroe Islands from the beginning. Also, to collect foreign printed material that deals with the Faroe Islands and the Faroese people. The library is a deposit library which means that it receives a copy of everything that is printed in the country.

To preserve the Faroese cultural heritage which has been arranged in the library and provided the best possible care.

To make the cultural heritage accessible to research in fields related to the Faroe Islands and the Faroese people or those who wish to enjoy Faroese books as memorabilia and cultural phenomenon.

The Faroese National Collection also receives and collects Master and PhD thesis written in Faroese and/or about Faroese affairs.

General services and reference services

Those who need access to items from the Faroese National Collection must turn to a librarian at the service desk. Works from the Faroese National Collection are not for circulation, but always accessible at the library. To borrow a book, the user must fill out a request (see Terms for use of manuscripts and rare materials). Please fill out this application in order to see manuscripts and other rare materials. Emphasis is laid on helping the users in any type of information searching on Faroese topics and facilitate their access to printed works. Questions are also received by telephone and email. Guests are asked to sign a guestbook; store their overcoats in the wardrobe and bags in closets in the entrance hall.

The service desk is staffed from 10:00 - 18:00, Mon. – Thu.
Friday from 10:00 - 17:00
Closed on Saturdays and Sundays

Reading Room

Users of the Faroese National Collection can request a working place in the reading room. The reading room holds eight worktable including two with computers. One can also work on a computer at each of the worktables.

The worktables should be empty when users leave the room. It is possible to have material stored in lockers in the entrance hall of the Library for a few days upon request.
